My COLOR MAP paintings are driven by the dynamics of adjacencies–the interaction of adjacent colors, textures, and patterns.

Beginning with a drawing of a single, looping, and crossing line, sectors are determined–sometimes with an image in mind; most often, not. This drawing is done on the light blue protective film of my thin, plastic (PETG) “canvas.”

I then cut the protective film, following the line drawing–creating discrete sectors of the design, like boundaries on a map– allowing me to expose and paint one section at a time.  Each area is filled with several layers of color, distributed in unique textures and patterns using various masking techniques. I particularly enjoy the artistic gymnastics of applying layers of pigment using static, water, solvent, and other techniques to make each section its distinct color entity while building the entire composition. I have often said, “It’s all about entertaining ME” and this body of work tracks my journey through some very entertaining terrain.

Like all my work, the intention is to draw the eye from a distance, but reward the viewer with intricate complexities and chromatic delight as the work is examined more closely.
